A Joyful Noise

A Joyful Noise

$11.78

When it came time to put together her debut holiday album, multi-platinum artist Jo Dee Messina knew exactly who she wanted sitting beside her at the control board: famed producer Brent Maher. Messina has long considered the man responsible for holiday albums by Kenny Rogers, The Judds and Kathy Mattea (for which he won a Grammy) to be the “Father Christmas” of record producers. The end result is the co-produced A Joyful Noise. Messina put a great deal of thought into her first holiday collection knowing that above all else, she wanted the end result to be her personal holiday sentiments, delivered simply and honestly. Her hope was that the listener felt she was in their own home, singing directly to them. Listeners will be pleasantly surprised to find traces of her personality – like Messina laughing during “Let It Snow” – left on the tracks. And when it came time to enlist the help of a few of her favorite singers Messina knew she wanted Vince Gill and Kenny Rogers as her guests. The decision to use Rogers on “What Child Is This” was an easy one, “Kenny has always been Mr. Christmas to me,” she commented. “We’ve had a mutual respect for each other for some time and have talked about doing something together. I’ve been a fan of his holiday tour since seeing it in New York a few years back,” Messina continued. While she admits to adoring Vince Gill both as a singer and as a person, Messina didn’t simply assume he’d agree to be a part of her album. “I was nervous about having Brent ask him,” she acknowledges. Since adding his vocals to “Silver Bells,” Messina simply says, “I’m honored that he is a part of my first holiday album.” The New England native leaned towards the classics on A Joyful Noise, songs that were a part of her childhood holiday celebrations. In addition to “What Child Is This” and “Silver Bells,” listeners will be treated to: “O Holy Night,” “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland,” “The Christmas Song,”

All Rebel Rockers

All Rebel Rockers

$9.25

Personnel: Michael Franti (vocals, guitar); Dave Shul (guitar); Raliegh J. Neal II (keyboards); Mannars Itiene (drums). Audio Mixer: Collin “Bulbie” York. Recording information: Anchor Studios, Kingston, Jamaica; NRG Studios, Van Nuys, CA; Studio Delux; The Sugar Shack, SF, CA. Photographers: Carla Swanson; Catherine Enny; Mike Schreiber; Michael Franti; Brandon P. Hirzel. After the politically overcharged anti-war rant of Yell Fire in 2006, Michael Franti & Spearhead felt a musical sea change coming. He’d recorded part of that album in Kingston, Jamaica with the legendary production team Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. For All Rebel Rockers they returned for more. The end result is their finest record to date. Reggae and dancehall are the preeminent musics here, but they aren’t the only ones. Franti set out to do what he always does, create a socially conscious set of tunes that reflected his social concerns, but he wanted to engage rather than merely express, to motivate by different means. Reggae is synonymous with resistance, but it is also often symbiotic with joy even in times of suffering. All Rebel Rockers focuses on both. It is a personal album that reaches out to solicit community and motivate them into the fold through joy – even if that joy is expressed in the middle of an oppressive, empire-minded culture. Sly and Robbie are perfect collaborators, and the album is drenched in wonderful collisions of rhythms, textures, colors, and dynamics. Franti is less a rapper here and more of a singer. He’s allowed his voice to relax (no crooning or yelling) and trust that his words have enough weight to make it through this dense “heavy music” mix to the listener. He’s right. All Rebel Rockers is the first record by Franti’s Spearhead that captures the power and goodwill of the band’s live shows. The title track is a toasting bubbler with organic and synthetic rhythms, a female backing chorus, scratching, scratchy dub guitars, and Carl Young’s uber-heavy

Recording information: Jungle City Studios, New York City; Sandra Gale Studios, CA; SOTA Studios, Toronto, ON; Twin Studios, Paris, France; Westlake Beverly Recording Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Westlake Santa Monica, Los Angeles, CA; Windmark Recording Studios, Santa Monica, CA. Anti existed as an album cycle before it existed as an album – arguably long before Rihanna knew what form her eighth album would take, either. Work on Anti began in the autumn of 2014 and proceeded in semi-public, progress being measured in Instagram posts and tweets, along with intermittent singles, each released to white-hot anticipation but none metamorphosing into massive hits. When Anti finally appeared in January 2016 – three years after Unapologetic and months later than expected – it bore none of these 2015 singles, a move that suggests a tacit acknowledgment that neither the curiously muted Kanye West and Paul McCartney collaboration “FourFiveSeconds” nor the unrestrained roar of “Bitch Better Have My Money” functioned as appropriate anchors for the album. Then again, neither would’ve felt at home on the cloistered Anti, the first of Rihanna’s records to feel constructed as a front-to-back album. Such a sustained sensibility distinguishes Anti from its predecessors, records where album cuts often felt like afterthoughts. That’s not the case with Anti. This is an album whose heart lies within its deep cuts. Mood matters more than either hooks or rhythm: it’s a subdued, simmering affair, its songs subtly shaded yet interlocked to create a vibe caught halfway between heartbreak and ennui. The latter has always been a specialty of Rihanna – her distance from her material was at once appealing and alienating – so hearing her lean into “Love on the Brain” and “Higher” is something of a revelation: her voice is hoarse and ravaged, yet she’s also controlled and precise, knowing how to hone these imperfections so her performance echoes classic soul while feeling fresh. These songs come at the end of the album, after a series of songs that drift and wonder, the sound of an artist trying to figure out not only what her album is but who she is. By the end of Anti, Rihanna may not arrive at any definitive conclusions about her art but she’s allowed herself
